Telecommunications infrastructure vendor Nokia Siemens Networks announced on Monday that it has won a deal with Unitech Wireless’ to supply the company's GSM network for operations in six areas in India, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The company will also take care of network operation and maintenance, the Managed Services contract with the wireless carrier states.

“We are creating a new global telecom model. We call it the Telco of the Next Decade that leverages existing competencies in the market to drive cost and time efficiencies, superior quality and flexibility that future proofs our operations in a rapidly changing competitive environment. Our partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks will help us pursue our unique model in these six circles as well.” said Stein Erik Vellan, managing director, Unitech Wireless.

The new network is expected to be based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi BTS platform, considered the most energy-efficient mobile base station currently available on the market. The solution enables excellent coverage with a small number of base stations, which results in reduced CO2 footprint and energy savings. Moreover, the Flexi BTS platform is 3G and LTE-ready, which should enable a fast and easy migration to the new technology. The Infrastructure provider also says that it is rolling out its softswitching solution, which is meant to offer operating expense savings of up to 70 percent.

“India is among the fastest growing telecom markets in the world. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi BTS and Managed Services offerings will allow Unitech Wireless, as a new operator in a competitive market, to reduce its time to market and yet maintain market competitiveness through a more efficient cost base,” said Urs Pennanen, Head of India region, Nokia Siemens Networks.

According to the agreement between the two companies, Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver a wide range of services to Unitech Wireless, including Network Implementation for building the network, Consulting and Systems Integration for network design (meant to deliver smooth interworking with the existing infrastructure from the carrier), as well as Care and Managed Services.
