Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has been named the top on-board handset-based navigation software vendor by ABI Research, which has just released its latest Vendor Matrix evaluation. At the same time, the research firm notes that Navigon and ALK Technologies were placed on the second and third positions, respectively.

ABI Research’s Vendor Matrix is being delivered as an analytical tool developed by the research firm itself, which is meant to offer a clear understanding of the various positions vendors occupy on different market segments. The evaluation is made according to the important parameters of “innovation” and “implementation,” which are determined courtesy of several criteria unique to each vendor matrix.

Practice Director Dominique Bonte commented, “Nokia’s recent decision to offer Ovi Maps for free globally across its smartphone portfolio further strengthens the number one ranking already obtained in the previous version of this Vendor Matrix. At the same time, Ovi Maps continues to be enhanced with features such as an online mapping portal, city guide local content, pedestrian map details, “Good Things” Points of Interest community feedback, and unique hybrid functionality. Finally, Nokia has bold plans to turn Ovi Maps into the leading open LBS development platform.”

According to ABI Research, in this particular matrix, under 'innovation,' it focused on examining the features delivered by the navigation software solution, its support for local searches, map upgrades availability, sharing features of the solution, and on its capability to deliver traffic information. Moreover, the research firm also looked into the business model on which the navigation application is based, as well as on the pricing options available with it.

“Under 'implementation,' ABI Research scrutinized the following criteria: the vendors’ market share, their carrier agreements and handset/PDA manufacturer agreements, the products’ mobile platforms and form factor coverage, and the general health of the vendor companies. The breadth of global coverage, quality and reliability, and customization options were also factors considered,” the research firm stated.

This Vendor Matrix is part of ABI Research’s Location Based Services Research Service, and those interested in learning more on the matter should head to the company's website for that.
