Two more Nokia mobile phones, the N79 and N85, have recently received a firmware update from the Finnish company, and we learn that the owners of such a handset are able to update the software via Nokia Software Updater, as well as over-the-air, by checking for updates from the device (entering *#0000# in the idle screen will take you to the device manager, from where you can start the update).

The most important improvements that the new firmware brings to the phones include turning controls (allowing users to flip the devices to silent incoming calls and alarms) an improved Nokia email wizard, as well as email notifications on the active idle screen (homescreen). Unfortunately, there are no exact details on what the update includes for the Nokia N85, but it seems that a changelog has surfaced for the firmware 20.175 that comes to Nokia N79.

Among the new features that the update brings along, we can count updated Bookmarks that allow users to remove Download link folders, MTP configuration to enable Social Cinema support, Email plug-in functionality, Media player default settings changes, Files on Ovi Widget, Turn “PnP Mobile Services” On or S&S Application updates.

Other improvements and corrections include Active Idle screen becomes blank in landscape mode, or Active Idle going dead after quickly accepting and rejecting an incoming video call, as well as improvements for the Application Manager, including Wrong Feature Manager flag used for seamless link functionality or The sis file that is installed to MoviNand or SD card that cannot be seen in application manager.

In addition, there are also improvements that apply to the application update, allowing users to upgrade graphic icons in Media Player / Media Settings through sis file, or to upgrade the ROM-based UI application by installing the newer versions on the memory card, as well as to the audio performance of the device, with tuning improvements for IHF audio and allowing the keypad tones to be tuned for IHF.

There are other improvements coming with the new firmware version, some related to the Auto-Rotate functionality or to the Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a series of bug fixes that have been included in the package, the entire changelog being available here. As always when it comes to performing an update, you should take all the necessary precautions and backup your data before proceeding so that no important files are lost.
