Yesterday, the first Windows Phone device from Nokia became available for purchase in the UK, namely the Lumia 800, and it seems that it actually enjoyed great demand.

The handset was made available both via wireless carriers and through various retailers in the country, including Orange, Three UK, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Phones4u or the Carphone Warehouse.

The new Nokia Lumia 800 was made available on monthly contracts that start at £26 a month with no upfront cost.

The guys over at Nokia Conversations hit the streets to learn how things go during the first day of handset's availability, and it seems that most users were impressed with the phone's looks and feel.

“It’s a very nice phone. It’s light and easy to use,” a customer said. “I’m going to get a blue headset with it,” he added.

Apparently, Carphone Warehouse employees were also impressed with the new device, and projected good sales.

The new Windows Phone has been registering strong demand during the pre-order period as well, which suggests that Nokia might actually see strong sales during the fast approaching holiday period.

As the company's first foray into the Windows Phone space, the Nokia Lumia 800 looks like a keeper, although the company is gearing up for the release of new, more powerful handsets.

One thing that is certain is that the Finnish giant does need to come up with Windows Phone devices that would have great impact on the public, so as to regain some of the market share it has been loosing during the past several quarters.

Later this year, Nokia will bring to the market another Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 710, a more affordable handset, which will see limited market availability in the beginning, the same as Lumia 800.

Starting with the next year, we should see more Nokia Windows Phone devices brought to shelves, as the company kicks-off mass production.
