The technology improves the vividness of the colors as well

Although ClearBlack technology is not among the newest in the mobile display industry, Nokia felt the need to explain how it worked and why it was using it in its latest Lumia series devices, as well as other high-end smartphones.

Those unfamiliar with the term should know that the ClearBlack technology is a method to reduce reflections on the screen, especially outdoors.

However, while other technologies provide more brightness to displays as a solution to counter the sunlight and improve outdoor usability, Nokia’s ClearBlack technology reduces the reflectiveness of the screen.

Using anti-reflective coatings, Nokia mobile displays provide the same level, or sometimes higher levels of outdoor usability as AMOLED displays.

Aside from increasing the brightness of the display to a certain limit that won’t take its toll on the battery, ClearBlack makes the blacks displayed on the screen really black, which in turn improves the contrast of the display.

Basically, with ClearBlack, Nokia’s smartphones will be able to provide a high-quality image, both indoors and outdoors, as the technology automatically adjusts the brightness level to optimum level depending on the location.

For the tech-savvy, Nokia has a more academic explanation that compares ClearBlack displays with a pair of polarizing glasses. Check out the explanative picture attached to the article and the in-depth explanation below:

- It hits the linear polariser, this vertically polarises the light;

- Then it hits the circular polariser retardation layer. This converts the light again, making it right-circularly polarized;

- Then it hits the screen and bounces off it, switching the rotation of the light to leftist;

- It goes back through the retardation layer. When this happens, the light becomes horizontally polarized;

- Finally, it hits the linear polariser, since the light is horizontally polarised at this point it can be blocked entirely by this optical solution.
