The first two spots in O2's Eco rating scheme are taken by Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7 smartphones, says O2 UK.

Furthermore, it seems that Nokia dominates the carrier's Eco rating system for mobile phones, as another Nokia device is ranked second place, the C7-02.

According to O2's Eco rating, the six most sustainable handsets currently being ranged by the carrier are Nokia C6-01, Nokia E7-00, Samsung Galaxy Mini, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Sony Ericsson X8 and Nokia C7-02.

The Eco rating was launched by O2 last August as part of its Think Big sustainability program, which was especially created to promote sustainable living through O2 products and services.

Eco rating’s scoring system is based on data supplied by manufacturers and covers three areas: the overall environmental impact of the device over its lifespan, the raw materials it contains, the impact caused by its manufacture, packaging, longevity and energy efficiency and how easy it is to reuse or recycle.

Although the environmental impact of a mobile phone may seem trivial when compared to say a car or fridge, when you consider the vast volumes of mobiles in circulation across the globe, their impact adds up,” said Simon Lee-Smith, O2’s head of devices.

Developed in collaboration with independent sustainability experts Forum for the Future, Eco rating aims at helping customers make an informed decision when buying a mobile phone.

According to the carrier, “under Eco rating, virtually every handset O2 sells is accorded a score out of 5 based on the environmental impact of the device, how it helps people lead more sustainable lives, and the ethical performance of the manufacturer.”

Even though 90% of the devices ranged by O2 are taken into consideration, BlackBerry handsets manufactured by RIM were only added to Eco rating at the beginning of this year.
