The first S60 Touchscreen handset

Samsung might have officially presented the first 8 Megapixel S60 smartphone, but Nokia is getting ready to unveil the very first full-touch handset to run on the popular Symbian platform: Nokia 5800 Tube.

Although the 5800 is not a novelty anymore (as details about it first appeared several months ago), it's only now that lots of live images with the handset have leaked on the Web.

Judging by the way it looks, the first touchscreen Nokia smartphone is definitely a threat to Apple's iPhone 3G, as well as to all the other high-end touchscreen devices announced this year: HTC Diamond, Samsung Omnia, Samsung Instinct, Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 or LG Dare.

The unofficial (hence unconfirmed) features of Nokia 5800 include: a 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen display with 640 x 360 pixels, 16 million colors, haptic feedback and handwriting recognition, a 3.2 Megapixel camera with auto focus, dual LED flash and video recording, quad-band GSM connectivity with GPRS and EDGE, HSDPA connectivity, internal GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headset jack, TV out and 140MB of expandable memory, all running on Symbian S60 5th Edition - especially optimized for a full-touch mobile experience (you can see this in the available images).

Nokia 5800 Tube relies on an 1150 mAh battery, weighs 104 grams and measures 111 ? 52 ? 14.5 millimeters. As you can see, the 5800 is a bit thicker than the iPhone 3G, but 10 mm smaller when it comes to width and 4.5 mm smaller in terms of length - which makes it a better choice for those who want tinier handsets.

Since it appeared on some websites under the names of 5800 XpressMedia or 5800 XpressMusic, the Tube's final and official name is not yet known. Neither is its release date or retail price, but if we were to believe the Web rumors, Nokia should announce the new touchscreen handset sometime in August.
