The developers at Rocksteady working on the upcoming Batman: Arkham City have been pretty ambitious about the scale of the video game and seem determined to add as much as possible of the universe surrounding the character to the experience.

But one representative has made it clear that players will only see Batman prowling around the city and that at no point will they be able to control Bruce Wayne, the real identity of the Bat.

Dax Ginn, who is one of the producers working on Arkham City at Rocksteady, has spoken to Sony about the game and said, “It’s a Batman game. He’s powerful and aspirational but you never lose sight of the fact that he is mortal. It’s such fertile ground and in Arkham City we will go deeper into the man behind the cowl by bringing in characters like Hugo Strange, who knows Batman’s true identity, and Talia al Ghul, who has a romantic relationship with him.”

He added, “ Through those characters we see his vulnerable side but our aim has always been to make an action game, not a business simulator, and when you start thinking about what you would do while playing as Bruce Wayne, it doesn’t seem terribly exciting in comparison.”

We already know that players will be able to control Catwoman for a portion of the single player of Batman: Arkham City and that Robin will be playable in the challenge section of the game.

Softpedia managed to get some hands-on time with Arkham City at the recent Gamescom 2011 event.

Arkham City is set to be four times as big as its predecessor, Arkham Asylum, and will see Batman try to stop the Joker as he tries to once again bring chaos to Gotham City.

The game will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 and will be available to North American gamers on October 18, with those in Europe getting it three days later.
