If we add up the sales numbers for the Nintendo Wii home gaming console and the handheld Nintendo DS, then the Japanese company managed to sell more than 3.6 million devices in just one month. Nintendo says that its products accounted for 66% of the hardware sales in November. Basically, the DS and the Wii outsold all the other consoles combined during this month.

The Nintendo Wii has sold 15.4 million units since it was launched (in November 2006). The huge number of units the console manages to move each month is only matched by the longevity of the videogames released for it.

Both Wii Fit and Wii Play, which are at times bundled with the console, are still present in the software sales chart, while Mario Kart Wii has witnessed a resurgence, taking the top spot in the United Kingdom sales chart in the recent two weeks. Bear in mind that Nintendo is rumored to be making 6 dollars profit on each Nintendo Wii sold, which adds up to quite a nice chunk of money.

Cammie Dunaway, who is the executive vice president of Sales & Marketing at Nintendo of America, has stated, related to the numbers, that “Nintendo's record-breaking sales demonstrate that consumers are looking for the best value not only among video games, but also among all entertainment options. Shoppers are looking for gifts that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and Nintendo provides an incomparable range of experiences that gets the whole family involved”.

Even if the Xbox 360, through a price cut and the release of the New Xbox Experience, is trying to reposition itself as the “family console,” the Nintendo Wii is still way ahead as far as sales go and the Microsoft made console cannot match it as the holiday shopping season unfolds.
