Software Update

This week has seen quite a few third-party Mac apps receive updates. Perhaps it would be fair to mention them all in today’s report, but, sadly, we can’t. However, updates to three popular apps this week – Rucksack, CleanMyMac, and Cocktail – are truly worth mentioning thanks to the important enhancements and fixes they deliver for their users.

Kicking off this week’s report on Mac app updates is Rucksack, a powerful archiving tool for Mac OS X. The program is actually a completely revamped version of the former iArchiver, developed by Dare to Be Creative. "Rucksack is a must-have tool for anyone working with archives," the developer explains. "Open all popular archive formats including RAR, StuffIt, 7Zip, and of course Zip. Safely back up your files with Rucksack’s built-in encryption support. And convert easily between archive formats, such as from RAR to Zip."

The changelog for version 1.1.0 (build 1460) reveals that Dare to Be Creative has added new abilities to the app, such as extracting multiple archives at once, deleting archives after extraction, an option to show output files in Finder, and Growl notifications. On the bug front, the developer has been able to fix the following three issues: crashes when splitting and combining very large files; can't create archives when installed in path with spaces; crashes when creating an archive with many files.

The Universal Binary program costs $29, while a trial version is available.

CleanMyMac 1.9.1, the second update we’re here to talk about, is just as important for users of the powerful cleaning utility for Mac OS X. It introduces a feature called CleanMyMac Skins, which allows the user to choose from two default themes – "Titanium" and "Marble," – and also makes it possible to create custom skins. An initial Language configuration dialog has been added, alongside a more detailed and clear description of found items. A few issues have also been fixed, including some typos in several localizations, and memory leaks.

Cocktail Leopard Edition 4.6.2, the third and last update included in today’s report, is a new version of Maintain’s Mac optimization utility. The new version fixes a bug where clearing the virtual memory swap files may cause kernel panics, as well as an issue where the trojan RSPlug was falsely detected. Following Intego’s recently posted security memo, Maintain added clearing of the latest variants of the HellRTS and OpinionSpy trojan horses, and also addressed an issue in which the system log server (syslogd) could not be properly restarted. Finally, the developer has updated Automator actions. Using the link below, all versions of Cocktail (Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and older) can be downloaded.
