Axiotron, the company producing the only tablet Mac available on the market, has announced that its new and enhanced ModBook is now shipping. The device boasts Improved MacBook Compatibility, a lightweight and scratch-resistant coating, enhanced functionality and new bundled software. Read on for the full breakdown.

Improved MacBook Compatibility

In a tech note on its web site, Axiotron reveals that the new and improved ModBook offers better system performance via a redesigned Axiotron hardware controller board. The device thus offers improved performance, a quicker boot time for the Axiotron system software and smoother integration with Mac OS X. Other highlights include:

• Improved power usage: Get longer battery life with the more efficient Axiotron hardware controller board, including significantly less power drain in sleep mode. • Full Bluetooth connectivity: Pair a keyboard or mouse just as you would on your MacBook.

Lightweight and Scratch-Resistant Coating

Axiotron's QuadCoat process is adapted from auto industry techniques, the company says. The coating helps protect the Modbook's sturdy-yet-lightweight magnesium top shell while lowering the Modbook's weight. As an additional result, the Modbook now weighs just 5.3 pounds.

Enhanced Functionality

Axiotron enumerates some of the characteristics improving the drawing surface, the reconfigured GPS antenna, and the specially designed internal Mu-metal shielding. The last, in particular, boosts pen tablet responsiveness by greatly decreasing the potential for interference from electronic noise sources, says Axiotron.

New Pre-Installed Software

Lastly, “[The] Autodesk SketchBook Express 2009, an industry leading sketching and drawing application, is now exclusively available on the Modbook, as part of its standard software package,” says Axiotron, who plans to include additional software enhancements for all Modbook users early next year.

Additionally, Axiotron has recently expanded Axiotron Authorized Service Provider network, which provides servicing and repair for ModBook users across the U.S. and Canada. The company is also prepping to roll out the ModBook Pro, a more powerful version of the ModBook.

Axiotron can turn any 13-inch MacBook into a ModBook, an all-touch-controlled Mac tablet. Interested parties can bring in their own MacBook, or can order a brand new one from Axiotron.
