2009 was, without a single doubt, the year for vampire and zombie movies. Following the immense success of “Twilight,” which was released in the fall of 2008, several other productions centering on the undead have emerged in both cinema and television. Now it’s time for another book series to be made into film, this time dealing with a vampire, as Variety informs.

While “Twilight” tells the story of the romantic triangle between Edward Cullen, a vampire, Bella Swan, a mortal, and Jacob Black, a werewolf, “Shiver” will turn the tables and make the protagonists a mortal woman and a werewolf. The twist is that the werewolf is actually a normal boy – or so for most of the year, only turning into the raging animal when temperatures drop and winter sets in.

The challenge, as one might easily imagine, is to keep the boy from turning and holding on to his human side at all costs. “Former New Line toppers Michael Lynne and Bob Shaye are moving ahead on supernatural romance ‘Shiver,’ hiring Nick Pustay (‘Ramona and Beezus’) to adapt for their Unique Features shingle. […] Unique Features, which has a first-look deal at Warner Bros., is developing an adaptation of Paul McCartney’s ‘High in the Clouds’; trilogies based on J.C. Hutchins’ ‘7th Son’ graphic novels and Cassandra Clare’s young adult fantasy ‘The Mortal Instruments’; and two Broadway musicals, ‘Elf’ and ‘Secondhand Lions.’” Variety writes of the upcoming project, as well as about ongoing ones.

“‘Shiver,’ penned by Maggie Stiefvater, centers on a bittersweet romance between a teen girl and a boy who becomes a wolf each winter. As the temperature drops, the race to keep him human begins. First installment was published by Scholastic Press in August and has been on the bestseller lists for 31 weeks. Sequel ‘Linger,’ will be published in August. ‘At the core is this heartbreaking love story, between two people who know that their time together is slipping away,’ Pustay said,” the movie-oriented publication further adds.

Another project on werewolves is Fox’s upcoming series “Howl,” of which we were telling you a while back and that will focus on a group of werewolf families always at odds against each other. Admittedly, the new show will offer an explanation for why people always go missing in Alaska, because that’s where it will take place.
