Sonya and Flash are in

When I heard that the next Mortal Kombat game would not continue the perennial war for Earth storyline, convoluted and inconsistent as it was, I got a bit disappointed. When I heard that the new Mortal Kombat game would feature a Dark Knight called Batman, I was ready to go into desperation mode, thinking of the carnage that Batman and Superman could cause in the Mortal Kombat universe.

But the developers revealed the fact that, in the game, the protagonists of Mortal Kombat are the ones doing the invading a DC Universe that has been severely weakened by magic use and that Superman and his ilk will be vulnerable to the way characters like Sub-Zero or Scorpion use their magical abilities. The above news rekindled my interest in the game, although Midway is not giving away much information regarding the title.

Now X360, a British based magazine that focuses on Xbox 360 news, has some more details about the cross over game. There's a long list of characters that will be making an appearance. Until now, it's known that we will see Green Lantern, Black Canary, Powergirl, Kabal, Jax, Raiden, Sonya Blade and The Flash. The game will feature 20 characters in total at launch and downloadable content might add new ones after launch.

The developers are also talking about a "a huge twist that no fan, DC or MK, saw coming" that will create the set up for a second game focusing on the Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe plot line.

I'm still not convinced that the development team will manage to nerf Superman in a meaningful and coherent way but the game is sure looking like a nice delivery vehicle for fan service. We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.
