Ultra-thin computers that can actually fit a pack of gum (well, more or less) are the trademark products of Gumstix, and now, the company's back with yet another, more powerful product of this type, namely the Overo Tide computer-on-module (COM), doubling the available RAM to 512 MB.

According to the manufacturer, the Overo Tide COM features the TI OMAP3530 Applications Processor with an ARM Cortex-A8 processor, C64x+ digital signal processor (DSP) core, and POWERVR SGX for 3D graphics acceleration.

Furthermore, a microSD card slot and TPS65950 power management module have also been incorporated on the Overo Tide module, which is quite an amazing feat, especially taking into account the fact that the size of such a module has been maintained at a minute 7mm x 58mm x 4.2mm (0.67 in. x 2.28 in. 0.16 in.).

Compatible with all existing expansion boards of the Overo series, the Overo Tide COM gives product developers an ever-increasing range of options via the dual 140-pin connectors on the bottom side of the COM and the 27-pin camera connector located on top.

Functional options available from the Overo series include 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, global positioning (GPS), touchscreen LCD, HDMI-over-DVI, accelerometer, NiMH battery power, battery backup, 10/100baseT Ethernet, dual Ethernet, USB high speed, USB OTG, stereo audio, cluster computing, camera and more.

"Gumstix customers using the Overo Tide COM in their final product(s) are those who already integrate a microSD card into their Gumstix-driven product," says Dr. W. Gordon Kruberg, president and CEO of Gumstix.

"They are seeking the faster performance of the 512MB RAM," added Mr. Kruberg.

As the company informs us, their Overo Tide COM is available for $145 USD in orders of 1,000 units or more, with no details being available regarding just how much one would have to pay for a single unit.
