VIA Technologies can pride itself with really interesting designs when it comes to low-power computer systems, and the company's latest makes no exception to the rule. Coming in a small-sized Pico-ITXe form factor, the new VIA P710-HD is touted as the first expansion HD module for the VIA EPIA-P710, has been designed to take advantage of the 4300E embedded graphics processor from S3 Graphics, and comes as the first Pico-I/O module for stackable Pico-ITXe boards, which can deliver Hi-Definition video playback in a compact and low-power form factor.

“VIA is again placing itself ahead of the competition in bringing to market all the benefits of high-definition visual computing in an ultra-low power, ultra compact product,” said Daniel Wu, vice president of VIA Embedded, VIA Technologies, Inc. “The VIA P710-HD module, when paired with a Pico-ITXe board, opens up a new world of digital brilliance.”

The P710-HD module has been designed on a graphics solution from S3 graphics and has been featured with 256MB of dedicated GDDR2 memory, offering support for dual DVI, HMDI and S-Video connectivity. The module will enable resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 with 2-channel LVDS and an analog VGA header. The graphics solution is fully compatible with DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1, while the integrated HDTV encoder technology offers support for all DTV ATSC and DVB standards, including 1080p.

In addition to all of the aforementioned features, the S3 Graphics 4300E is fully compatible with Blu-ray Disk technology with support for a range of codecs, including WMV9 HD, MPEG-2 HD, VC-1, H.264 and AVS. One of the major benefits of the new module is that it delivers all of these features inside a small and low-power solution.
