The new USM motor will be more compact than the current technology

Canon is known for its innovations in the digital camera field, and the fact that it was placed the first among Japanese firms to have the most patents awarded in the US last year proves just that.

According to CanonRumors, a new source has revealed that Canon is planning to introduce a new EF-S 24mm STM prime lens no later than this summer. At the moment, the company already has a 24mm f/1.4L II USM and 24mm f/2.8 IS USM lens in production, but the new model will pack a Stepping Motor instead of the usual Ultrasonic Motor used in previous versions.

Moreover, the same source claims that Canon is also working on a new USM motor called “C-USM” (Compact Ultrasonic Motor) that will be introduced later this year, most probably on a new 50mm lens.

As usual, take all of this with a considerable amount of salt, since it comes from a totally new source.
