A few weeks ago, there were two polls posted by Netflix, which referred to the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii as possible platforms of interest for the company and sought to evaluate how interested potential customers were in the Netflix service.

Then, the company posted a job announcement for the position of “engineering leader” that had responsibilities regarding moving the service to new platforms. Some of the conditions were related to experience in a videogaming company.

So, more and more people are waiting for an official announcement from Netflix related to a move away from the Xbox 360 and towards other gaming consoles in the near future.

Steve Swasey, who is in charge of corporate communications for Netflix, told 1UP that “Netflix is always looking for ways to grow the service. For now, Netflix streaming on game consoles is exclusively on the Xbox 360 - and it's a terrific hit. More than 1 million Netflix members who are Xbox Gold members have watched more than 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV episodes instantly over the Internet from Netflix via their Xbox 360.”

Of course, the “for now” in the above quote is significant proof that Netflix is indeed seriously exploring the idea of getting its services on the Nintendo Wii and on the PlayStation 3.

The technology is probably not quite there yet, but in the coming months, or maybe years, the advantage that Microsoft has in the console race due to movie streaming will probably disappear. The main console that might have to gain from more movies being available is the PlayStation 3, which also has a Blu-ray drive, enabling it to play multimedia content. Of course, Sony might choose to take another route and could develop its own service designed to bring streaming content to its console.
