Unlocking potential

There's a lot of talk in the videogaming world about the next generation of gaming consoles and how the devices might evolve to allow for better graphics, more complex gameplay or more interesting controls.

Both Microsoft and Sony have vehemently denied working on anything like the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox 720 and, despite the fact that gamers are always looking forward to the next big thing, videogame developers also seem content to work with the same hardware.

Naughty Dog, the creators of action adventure Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which appears on a lot of Game of the Year lists, are actually saying that they would not mind another six years of unlocking the secrets of the PlayStation 3.

Evan Wells, who is the co-president of Naughty Dog, told G4TV that “We're getting comfortable. We're not itching for new hardware. I would love to keep working on the PlayStation for 5 or 6 more years... I think there's still a lot to get out of it.” He added that when focusing on Uncharted, “we made a very big advancement between the first and the second game, we're really tapping into the Cell processor, but there's more there.”

With Uncharted 2, the developers are saying that they managed to actually keep the Cell processor 100% occupied for most of the time and use it to generate an experience that topped all the others in terms of smoothness and attention to graphical detail. Now, the company is ready to optimize its game engine in order to get even more performance out of the gaming console.

Uncharted 3, a title pretty certain to arrive at some point on the PlayStation 3 as an exclusive, will aim to offer even more post processing and more effects to enhance the graphical aspect of the experience.
