We're pretty sure that many of you, especially those with a penchant for all things hardware, have watched closely our technology section this week, given the abundance of reports regarding the latest Fermi graphics card to be released by GPU manufacturer NVIDIA, the already uber-famous GeForce GTX 580.

Nevertheless, given the pricing of the new GTX 580 (set at roughly 499 US dollars, sans taxes), as well as the numerous reports regarding the upcoming release of AMD's Radeon HD 6900 cards, many gamers are still rather undecided on whether to go for the new card from NVIDIA or wait until AMD strikes back and then make up their mind which way to go.

It seems, though, that the AMD Radeon 6970 will target a rather different price point than the GTX 580 and, thus, deliver a different (inferior) level of performance, according to a report by KitGuru, quoting some very trusted (yet unnamed) sources, quite close to AMD's camp.

Nevertheless, the same report points out that the value for money delivered by the next-gen Radeon card will be absolutely “stunning”, which means that we should expect quite an impressive level of performance too.

And should the differences in performance prove to be not significantly high (while NVIDIA retains its current pricing plan for the GTX 580), then we're pretty sure that many gamers will actually opt for AMD's GPU, especially if we're talking about those categories that have been hit harder by the seemingly never-ending economic downturn.

Naturally, for the time being, we're only talking about speculation, rumors and hearsay, and we'll make our final judgment on the actual performance/price ratio after getting the chance to carry out a head-to-head review of both products, on the same platform, something that will hopefully happen at some point in the near future (but look out for the GTX 580 review, that's coming a whole lot faster).
