As some may or may not know, SandForce recently released its new line of controllers, which support faster speeds for SSDs, and Mushkin has now decided to build upon them by creating the EP series of solid state drives.

For those interested in a reminder, the new line of SSD controllers that SandForce prepared is known as the SF-2000 series.

Essentially, the series' members enable support for the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface and speeds of up to 500 MB/s for both reading and writing.

The same chips also drive random read and write speeds to 60,000 IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second).

Companies like OWC, Viking Modular Solutions and OCZ have already made their move as far as SATA 6.0 Gbps SSDs are concerned, and Mushkin is now joining in, or will soon do so, with the EP series.

"This new series of SSDs continues Mushkin's tradition of high-performance, high-reliability flash storage products," said Brian Flood, Mushkin director of product development.

"This is an area in which we have made great strides and we're very excited to introduce our technology exclusive to the business sector. We feel very confident staking our name with these SSDs for business critical applications," Flood added.

In addition to all of the performance specifications mentioned above, Mushkin will outfit its drives with advanced ECC with up to 55 bits correctable per 512-byte sector (BCH).

Finally, there will be Power/performance throttling, a feature that should help improve energy conservation and efficiency.

Of course, since the SF-2000 line includes, for now, only controllers for enterprise storage units, the EP SSDs will be aimed at servers, data centers and other such applications.

Availability is set for Q1, 2011, but the first sample shipments of the Mushkin EP series should commence by the end of the year.
