A good result for Midway

Midway Games, one of the companies hardest hit by the world wide economic crisis, is announcing that its title Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has sold more than 1.8 million units since launch. The game is currently available on the Xbox 360 console from Microsoft and on the PlayStation 3 from Sony. It's not clear whether Midway is interested in porting the game to the PC.

Ed Boon, the man who developed the series and who is now a creative director at Midway, said that “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort. We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future.”

Midway is also saying that the game has been the most pre-ordered in the franchise and that more than 3.6 million online gamers of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe have fought over the PlayStation Network. No data has been made available for the matches played over the Xbox Live service.

The fighting game created by Midway mixes classic characters from the Mortal Kombat universe with heroes and villains from that created by DC Comics. As the two universes collide due to an unknown force, all the fighters will need to adapt to a new situation, in which their powers fluctuate wildly, leading to situations where Scorpion is able to defeat Superman himself. The game adds, alongside its diverse roster, new mods, like Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat, which are designed to make the game more exciting.

Because the title needed a T rating, on the request of DC Comics, the overall feeling is that of less violence, with some of the most gruesome Fatalities being taken out of the game.
