If Midway stays afloat

We reported yesterday that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe managed to sell more than 1.8 million units, which is very good news for Midway, a company that has been caught badly by the credit crunch. And it seems that due to this success, there's a good chance that we might see another Mortal Kombat videogame at the beginning of 2010, if not even sooner.

Series creator Ed Boon talked to MTV Multiplayer at the Comic Con in 2008 and appears to have provided some insights into how the upcoming game might look. He said that “When we do the next M-rated game, it’ll have that much of a newness and a freshness of a first next-gen 'Mortal Kombat'. I think that element of newness is totally necessary with games, especially franchise games that have had five, six, seven versions. Without it, you see your sales slowly go away because people have felt like they’ve already played the game.”

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has a rating of Teen, which was requested by DC Comics because of the involvement of superheroes like Superman, who are not supposed to be maniac killers like the majority of the characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. To get the T rating, Midway dropped the Fatalities and some of the over top violence in the game, while making all the DC characters only hurt their opponents in very interesting ways instead of killing them outright. Some fans have declared themselves disappointed by this move.

There's also a hint from Boon that the new title might even have a whole fresh graphics engine, which would allow a wider range of moves for the game. The people at Midway must be moving very quickly if they plan to release another installment in the fighting game early in 2010.
