One of the most highly anticipated titles of the end of the year is Modern Warfare 2, the follow-up to the hugely successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare game. This new iteration, which will be developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, is set to break sales records, as executives from the two companies have revealed.

With a 15-second teaser trailer shown on TV in the last few days, the hype has already begun to reach critical levels, as gamers have started to speculate wildly on what the story of the title will be, where the battles will take place, who will be the main antagonists and, most importantly, what gameplay features will be present.

We reported yesterday that the June issue of Game Informer promised to shed some light on these subjects, via a 10-page report on the game, and now it seems that subscribers who have already received the magazine have shared some of the details found there.

First of all, is seems that Modern Warfare 2 will be dominated by icy settings, as shown in the short TV ad, where the battle was taking place in a tundra-like background. The main subject of the story will be a Russian terrorist threat, as it was rumored from the first teaser trailer, which offered insight into that.

Sadly, it seems that Modern Warfare 2 won't have a cooperative single-player campaign, like the last title in the Call of Duty series, World at War. Instead, a multiplayer option will be present in a new Special Forces mode, which has been described in the magazine by Infinity Ward President Jason West as “in the spirit of the Mile High Club” from Call of Duty 4.

As regards the gameplay of this future title, West says that it is “wide open and has a lot of variety.” But even though this might make players believe it will be more similar to a sandbox game, the story will be quite linear, as the executive says that “any good story is on rails.”

These are the biggest details that have appeared up until now about this game, which will come out in November of this year, but expect to find out more in the following weeks. Until then though, you can still play the last two games in the series, World at War and the first Modern Warfare.
