XNA plans to release free stuff

Dave Mitchell, Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Game Developer Group has decided to talk, and maybe he should have kept his mouth shut. In his opinion, the PS3 Linux is not as competitive when compared to XNA, as it is revealed in a Gamasutra interview preview.

What he wanted to say and couldn't, being an executive and everything, I said it: PS3 Linux sucks, XNA rulz! When asked about Sony's efforts to develop a PlayStation homebrew culture, by allowing Linux to be installed on the PS3, he responded that he doesn't view what exactly Sony accomplished by releasing a console with Linux support.

Mitchell continued by emphasizing the difference between this Sony gimmick and the XNA, as in his view there is a fundamental difference between the two, and is not just about providing access to a platform, but about making an investment into something, and ensuring that people who will want to make games on a console are successful in doing that. He explains that this company is focused on providing great tools, at a very low price or even free, for those who want to create games for Windows and Xbox 360.

What is ironic about Linux running on PS3 is that some guys used Linux in order to make Windows XP run on the PS3. I would have liked to know that Dave Mitchell has to say about that. He promises a lot of interesting stuff, some free from the looks of it, but we'll have to wait and see if he delivers.

This is only one part of this interview, the full interview with Dave Mitchell Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Game Developer Group will be published on Gamasutra soon. Until then you can download "Microsoft XNA Game Studio" HERE.
