Windows 10 Mobile and Enterprise will arrive this fall

Up until now we were referring to the next version of Windows Phone either as Windows 10 for Phones or Windows 10 Mobile.

Although Microsoft seemed determined to drop the Windows Phone naming scheme for its upcoming mobile operating system, the company did not officially confirm the change.

Today, the Redmond-based company announced two new versions of Windows 10 Mobile, thus dropping the Windows Phone name at the same time.

The Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise Editions will be released later this fall, probably around the same timeframe. For the time being, we only know Windows 10 will arrive on PCs this summer, but an exact launch date will probably be announced closer to launch.

Although changing the Windows Phone name to Windows Mobile might cost Microsoft some money, as well as time to educate customers, ultimately consumers will probably know it by a single name: Windows 10.

Windows 10 will be available in both PC and mobiles, so the addition of “Mobile” will probably be mostly used internally or to designate updates that will be released for either versions of the operating system.

The move marks the return to the old days of Windows Mobile

This is not the first time that Microsoft comes with the Windows Mobile name. Back in early 2000, Microsoft launched Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5 and 6.

Windows Phone 7 was the next name for Microsoft's mobile platform, soon followed by Windows Phone 8 and 8.1. So, 2015 marks the return to the roots when the mobile operating system was named Windows Mobile.

Microsoft has a very busy schedule this year, since many versions of Windows 10 will be launched on PC, smartphones, tablets and console.

As mentioned earlier, the first to come will be the PC version, followed soon by the mobile version. Since it's a bit too early to talk about release dates, we will wait for more details to emerge in the coming weeks.
