Still April, but earlier

Sources initially said that Gears of War 3 would be out in April 2010 then, after a four-day delay, Cliff Blezinski appeared on the Late Night show and talked about the game, saying that the actual launch date for the final chapter in the series would be April 8.

Microsoft, which already debuted ads for the game on Xbox Live before the television show, then launched an official press release saying that, in fact, Gears of War 3 would be appearing in North America and in Asia on April 5, with the Japanese launch taking place two days later and with European gamers getting access to the game on April 8.

The game remains an Xbox 360 exclusive and Epic Games is pushing the idea that this is really the last title they will create in that universe and that they plan to end the franchise with a bang.

The main story will again be built around Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and a cast of fellow COG soldiers who must now confront a threat that could actually be tougher than the Locust horde. The new Lambent horde, which was glimpsed by players in the previous two games, is breaching the surface in full force and relies on warriors that can mutate in mid fight and get enemies even when they are in cover. Gears of War 3 will also see female soldiers joining the fight for the first time. Also, new weapons will be introduced.

Cliff Bleszinski, the design director at Epic Games, said, “When we released ‘Gears of War’ more than three years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad. This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the ‘Gears of War’ saga, and we can’t wait to deliver it.”
