Actor Mel Gibson is bound to make a career comeback after landing a “pivotal” cameo in the follow-up to the highly successful 2009 bromance comedy “The Hangover,” now tentatively called “The Hangover 2.”

The Hollywood Reporter has learned Gibson is determined to shake off weeks of bad press and criticism from the fans by taking on a comedic role that will also, hopefully, resurrect his film career.

Since hype around “The Hangover 2” is just starting to build up after the announcement that the original cast (minus Heather Graham) will return for the sequel, landing the part of a tattoo artist will set Gibson on the right path.

“The ‘Edge of Darkness’ actor will make the brief appearance in the Todd Phillips comedy ‘The Hangover 2’,” THR says.

“The New York Post reported today that Gibson’s cameo was ‘a done deal’ and that filming was due to take place shortly on the Warner Bros. lot,” the same report says.

“The sequel will feature the return of Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha who starred in the original as friends trying to piece together a rowdy Vegas bachelor party. This time the location for the partying mishap is set for Bangkok, Thailand,” THR writes.

According to well-informed sources, Gibson’s part as a tattoo artist will be “pivotal” to the plot. One of the characters will obviously be going to get inked while intoxicated.

Though Gibson’s involvement is still to be confirmed, word on the blogosphere has it that Zach Galifianakis is very upset about the decision to cast him in the film, presumably because of the scandal that has been playing out in the media for the past few months.

Even more, Galifianakis is not shy to speak out about it, hinting in a recent interview that he did his best to oppose the decision to cast Gibson in the film, NY Mag’s Vulture believes.

“But a movie you’re acting in, you don’t have a lot of control – you just show up and vomit your lines out. I’m not the boss,” Zach said in a recent interview.

“I’m in a deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something. But I can’t get the guys to [listen]... I’m not making any leeway,” he added.

When the interviewer tried to name “The Hangover 2,” Zach cut in: “It has something to do with a movie I’m working on, yeah. I’ll tell you about it later. It’s very frustrating.”
