The team struggled with the design of Tali and Commander Shepard

Matt Rhodes, an artist at BioWare, is giving fans of both Mass Effect and Dragon Age a chance to take a look at some of the concept art created for the series and see how the design of their favorite characters has changed over time.

The developer says that, at one point, the team considered turning Commander Shepard into a creature similar to Saren, mixing human and alien technology, which would have prompted Asley or Kaiden to confront him in the first game.

Bioware also struggled with the decision to reveal the face of Tali, which was long hidden behind the mask of her environmental suit.

Rhodes says on his blog, “Personally, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to push players to the edge. Tali was like a pen pal, or a friend you’ve only ever known online. Depending on how attached to her a player was, how well could they handle her appearance challenging their expectations?”

The personal blog of the artist also offers a look at how the concept art of Dragon Age influenced the final concepts behind the role-playing game.

Some of the images are linked to the coming Inquisition titles and offer some clues about character choices.

Rhodes adds, “I’m excited to show off the concept art we’ve done for Dragon Age Inquisition. I have a feeling you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the effect my strong, intelligent wife and beautiful little daughter have had on my portrayal of women.”

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be launched in 2014 on the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, current-gen devices and the PC and will probably take players to Orlais for the first time in the series.

BioWare is also working on a new Mass Effect title, which will use new characters and concepts and which currently does not have a launch date.
