One of the leading developers working on the upcoming Mass Effect 3 has stated that the team creating the game is cramming as much player choice as possible in the narrative of the game, aiming to allow the gamer to provide an answer to all the problems set up by previous games in the series.

Casey Hudson, who is the producer working on Mass Effect 3 and one of the main developers for the whole series, has said, “With the first one, we’re kind of launching everything, and we’re kind of throwing up these huge threads to the later stories.”

He then went on to describe the second game in the series as being hard to create because it needed to set up the plot of the third title while also solving some threads left unresolved after the first installment.

Hudson added, “But with Mass Effect 3, this is really the opportunity to do whatever we want with the reminder of the story – which means players can do whatever they want with the remainder of the story. Your decision can have much bigger consequences, things that you’ve done earlier can have much bigger consequences.”

BioWare has long been known for creating video games where player choice and complex stories are at the center of the experience with a number of possible endings built upon subsets of decisions.

But the action focus of the Mass Effect series has meant that some of the choices players made were linked to characters or to small situations and failed to make a huge impact on the entire universe.

Mass Effect 3 was originally set to arrive during the fall of this year but has been pushed back to March 2012.

The game will be available at the same time on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC.
