Yesterday, the Internet blew up in flames with reports of BBFC refusing to rate Rockstar's controversial and violent video game, Manhunt 2. Apparently, the ESRB has had some trouble with the title, but they've finally settled on an "18 years and older" rating. However, Rockstar may lose big time because of this.

"Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.", says the ESRB ratings guide. Wal-Mart and other hot shot retailers refuse to hold AO titles, so Rockstar stands to lose a lot.

The developer was contacted by gaming site 1UP for some more information about the board's decision, which they are currently taking "very seriously," as the site informs. The company believes Manhunt 2 "is a great game for mature audiences" and "created for gamers who like the horror genre and is consistent with what contemporary entertainment [has to offer]." Gameplay footage may tell a different story to the likes of Jack Thompson and friends; nevertheless, the situation is delicate.

"Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating...we are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2," said parent company Take-Two Interactive in a statement.

However, things aren't exactly peaches and pie on the other side of the fence either, with anti-game crusaders such as Jack Thompson, attorney extraordinaire, who have an exaggerated negative opinions towards games featuring sex and violence. If a person is well educated, that person will surely make the difference between right and wrong. So, what's wrong with staring at a gorgeous female video game character or shooting everyone in sight (as the plot says you're in WW II), as part of an exciting fantasy put into practice at home on the video game console?as long as you don't hurt anyone, or yourself?

Here's a good example showing that neither side is totally right when it comes to delicate issues such as this one. Thompson wanted to stop a Wendy's Kids Meal toys promotion that offered toys based on Wii titles, because Manhunt 2 will be released on the Wii. So what? Scarface is on it, Resident Evil has been ported to it too, as well as Mortal Kombat. Who says it's a friendly console? Thompson, that's who...
