Last week, the tabloids went crazy when photos of Lourdes Leon (Lola), Madonna's 15-year-old daughter, smoking a cigarette emerged online. Today, the singer addresses this so-called controversy, admitting she's none too happy about it.

Madonna sat down for an interview with The Today Show and you can see a preview for it below, embedded at the end of the article.

Among other things, Madonna talks about her successful career and how she will keep on doing what she does for as long as she feels she still has things to say, to creatively manifest herself.

However, the topic she most lingers on is that of the photos of her daughter smoking a cigarette. “We weren't very happy,” Madonna says when asked how she felt when she saw the pics.

“I'm probably not as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. Every day is a negotiation, but cigarette smoking I'm not very fond of – for anyone,” Madonna says.

When the interviewer tells her that she too is seen smoking in the video for “Girl Gone Bad,” Madonna points out that her cigarette in that case was “just a prop,” a “fashion accessory.”

“[Lourdes] doesn't get that from me,” she says laughing.

Madonna also admits that being a single mother is no walk in the park and even she, the superstar, is dealing with it to the best of her abilities.

“To be a single mother of four and to work as much as I do, with my life in a kind of metaphorical fish bowl, it's pretty challenging. But so far I've survived with sanity and humor intact,” the diva says.

The video played before the interview also makes a brief mention of how poorly Madonna's latest album, “M.D.N.A.,” fared and how it registered an almost 90% drop in sales in its second week from release.

Unfortunately for all those dying to know what's the singer's response to that, the preview doesn't include one.
