On top of announcing the 64-bit processors Snapdragon 610 and 615, Qualcomm has also pushed the Snapdragon 800 successor out into the world.

Qualcomm says the new Snapdragon 801 will up things in the performance department with 14% and with 28% in the graphics department, notes Slashgear.

The image sensor will upgrade things with 45% compared with its predecessors. Despite being quite capable, the chips are said to be low on energy consumption.

It should also be noted that the new Snapdragon 801 is compatible with Snapdragon 800 (even at software level), which should be great news for device manufacturers. Apart from that, the new chip unit has the same Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU.

That means device manufacturers will be quick to adopt the new chip architecture and we have just seen Sony announce its new Xperia Tablet Z2 running on the platform (check out hands-on with the tablet right here).

Devices sporting the Snapdragon 801 will be offering a bunch of extra features right off the bat, including Cat4 LTE support, dedicated hardware for dual-SIM dual-active (DSDA) mode and support for resolution up to 2560 x 2048 + 1080p or 4K external displays via H.265 video codec.

We can expect to see more devices sporting the new chip as soon as this quarter.
