As previously expected, Sony announced its newest Xperia-branded tablet at MWC 2014, which has previously leaked in the news as Castor.

Say hello to the Xperia Z2 tablet, the follow-up of the Xperia Tablet Z slab, which was unveiled a year ago on the same grounds in Barcelona.

Sony likes to make big claims, so it advertises the tablet as the “world’s slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet” and this might just be right as the new slate is only 6.9mm / 0.27 inches thick and weighs 426 g / 439 g – 0.93 / 0.96 lbs depending on whether we’re talking about the Wi-Fi or 3G/LTE model.

The new Xperia Z2 Tablet has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 Triluminos display bundling Sony’s new Live color LED tech. This new system blends red and green phosphor with blue LEDs in order to produce a bright, uniform light.

A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor lies under the bonnet, combined with a hefty 3GB of RAM.

Other notable feats you can expect to see the tablet arrive with include Sony’s Front Surround dynamic audio, noise canceling tech (it will reportedly block up to 98% of ambient noise when used in combination with noise cancelling headphones) plus a neat Wireless Controller so users can pair the tablet with a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 controller.

In the photography department, you’ll be pretty impressed too, as Sony has implemented an 8.1MP front snapper with Superior Auto mode, while the front houses a decent 2.2MP camera. Everything on board is powered by a relatively big 6000 mAh battery, so the tablet should last enough for you to do your business.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet will be available in black and white coloring options and will arrive in somewhere around March for $499 / €363.
