"Only a subset of phones" will get the first build

Windows 10 for phones preview is very likely to launch this week, but this isn't really good news for everyone, given the fact that only a few devices would actually get this early build.

Microsoft's Gabriel Aul has already confirmed that "only a subset of phones" would get the first build of Windows 10, so everybody's obviously wondering if their device is on the list of supported models for this first release.

Unfortunately, information coming from within the company points to only a handful of models that are being used by Microsoft right now to test the existing builds of Windows 10 for phones, so many Windows Phone users might actually be skipped in this initial rollout.

Flagships first, everyone else later

Right now, it appears that Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1020 are both being used by Microsoft's testers to try out the operating system and find any bugs that might affect overall performance.

At the same time, HTC M8 for Windows is also likely to get the build because Microsoft is now running Windows 10 on this device to see the behavior of the new OS on non-Lumia phones.

Additionally, Lumia 930, which continues to be Microsoft's newest flagship device, is also expected to get the first Windows 10 for phones build, and so are Lumia 830 and other several models.

As WindowsCentral notes, many other phones are expected to be added to this list of supported models, but keep in mind that some devices could indeed be skipped in this initial rollout, as internal testing is still underway right now at Microsoft.

Devices with 512 MB of RAM will also get the preview bits at some point in the future, Microsoft says, but given the fact that Lumia 520 continues to be the most popular Windows Phone model on the market, expect the company to do its best to make this happen as soon as possible.
