Down under in Australia

Australian customers are in for a treat from Sony. The company has staged a media event to announce its results for the year and to show off its latest promotions regarding the upcoming Christmas period.

Sony is saying that all those who buy a PlayStation 3 beginning with October 23 will also receive a copy of LittleBigPlanet, a game which has attracted a lot of media attention lately. The game will be offered at no extra cost and the customer will receive the game at the time he picks up his gaming console from the store.

LittleBigPlanet is launching worldwide later this month and Sony is really betting big on the game. The developers at Media Molecule have managed to create a videogame which blends classical platform action with a powerful level editor used to create everything from a re-make of Space Invaders to a level of Shadow of the Colossus. Bear in mind the fact that, at the moment, the whole game and the editor are only in beta and most of the features are still locked, so we might see even more amazing things once the full game is out.

Even though we have a beginning date for the promotion, Sony has not said when it ends, but you can probably safely bet that you will get the bundle well into the Christmas period. The new PSP-3000 will also be promoted via a bundle including a copy of Lego Batman.

Sony says that there are more than 385,000 people playing on a PlayStation 3 in Australia and estimated that, by January 2009, the figure is likely to reach 500,000 if the Christmas promotions hit their mark.

It will be interesting to see if a similar bundle is also launched in North America and Europe, especially considering the fact that Sony has recently said that no bundles and no price cuts are expected for this Christmas.
