“Behind the Candelabra” was turned down by countless studios and networks for being “too gay” before HBO finally picked it up, Matt Damon once revealed. The first official trailer for the film offers a good look at the story thus labeled by industry executives.

Check it out above in full.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and also starring Michael Douglas, Scott Bakula and Rob Lowe, besides Damon, the film is based on Scott Thorson’s tell-all about his 5-year affair with the famous pianist.

Damon plays Scott, while Douglas is Liberace.

“Behind the Candelabra” will delve into the details of a secret love affair, of a sumptuous life that lacked nothing but love, of a relationship that started out as a fairytale and slowly evolved into unhealthy, destructive co-dependence.

The trailer does a brilliant job at capturing all that, while the stellar cast is the warmest recommendation possible.

HBO has set a tentative release date for the biopic for Spring 2013. Will you be watching?
