Here’s something you don’t get to see every day: Matt Damon and Michael Douglas in full makeup, wigs and the flashiest, most fabulous outfits we’ve seen this year, sharing an embrace – as pictured on the cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. The two are promoting HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra.”

Described by the publication as “one of the weirdest, glitziest gay love stories ever put on film,” the film was turned down by various studios for being “too gay” before it was picked up by HBO.

Michael and Matt jumped at the chance of portraying Liberace and his lover Scott Thorson, on whose book the film is based on. Of course, they knew they would be in a world of firsts with this project.

In the EW interview, the actors talk about doing love scenes (of which there are plenty) together, getting tans and makeup, and the kind of research they had to do to bring to life one of the most colorful couples (though not officially, of course) in showbiz.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, “Behind the Candelabra” has a tentative premiere date for Spring 2013.
