Gears of War 3, the third-person shooter from Epic Games that will arrive this year exclusively on the Xbox 360, is one of the biggest launches of the year, but some of the surprises in the game have already been revealed via a leaked game build that was at one point widely available on torrents.

Executive producer Rod Fergusson says that it does not make sense for gamers to seek out and play these kinds of leaks because it's in many ways like finding out how a magic trick is performed before actually seeing its final results.

The developer spoke to Edge and said about the Gears of War 3 leaked build that, “The leak was a pretty old build so it’s not truly representative of what the final game’s going to be. The one nice thing about a leak on Xbox is that it’s somewhat limited. A PC leak is much more devastating so basically everybody in the world could play it if they wanted to, whereas an Xbox leak requires certain modifications, which means at least the audience is smaller.”

Fergusson says that such a data leak also affects those who are working on the game because they are interested in getting a complete product to gamers rather than having to compete with incomplete builds that can create a wrong image about the final experience.

The executive producer added a word of praise and also caution for game fans, saying, “I love the fact that they’re hungry for information. I love that they’re eager and I want to keep them interested. But at the same time I don’t want that eagerness to hurt the experience for themselves.”

Gears of War 3 will be out on September 20 on the Xbox 360 and is the last game in the current arc of the franchise.
