With a large Lord of the Rings fanbase, it was more than normal for developers to grab the license to produce one or more LOTR games. Vivendi got a bit of the LOTR action, Codemasters got a slice of the cake and EA as well.

Now, 1up has a speculative story according to which the upcoming Lord of the Rings RPG, The White Council will be no more: "Under the condition of anonymity a source revealed to 1UP that the ambitious, licensed, RPG that was to be Lord of the Rings: The White Council is no more." They also reveal that EA did not wish on this issue when contacted.

The game was set to be released sometime in 2007 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The working title of the game was "Project Gray Company" and if you are a LOTR fan, you have to know that "The Grey Company" was a group of rangers that accompanied Aragon along the Paths of the Dead in Tolkien's The Return of the King. Furthermore, the chapter of Book Five of the same work was also called "Project Gray Company".

In The Lord of the Rings: The White Council, players were supposed to choose a Man, a Dwarf, an Elf or a Hobbit as the main character. Their goal was to become allied with the White Council, the most influential group in the game. Little is known about the game, except for what executive producer Steve Gray had to say when the game was first announced back in July 2006:

"Our extremely talented and dedicated team is committed to creating an incredible new experience for fans of The Lord of the Rings and role playing gamers. With its next generation gameplay and epic new storyline, we think The Lord of the Rings, The White Council will be a huge success."
