Recently, South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics has announced via a Facebook post that there won't be an Android 2.3 Gignerbread operating system update for its LG Optimus devices, but it seems that the company actually jumped the gun on this one, and that the OS upgrade might arrive for these handsets as well.

The reason for which the LG Optimus phones were said to have been left out of the Gingerbread land was their slower application processor.

According to LG, the handsets pack CPUs clocked in at 600MHz, while Google set the processor hard limit at 1GHz, though this was not the case, the Mountain View-based Internet giant unveiled.

“LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus,” the leading handset vendor notes in an official statement on the matter.

However, the company does not commit to delivering the software update to its users, but its announcement does not rule out the possibility either.

While it is considering the possibility that its Optimus line would receive an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it remains to be seen whether the final decision would be in favor or against.

“Google recently announced the Gingerbread platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code,” LG continues.

“Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. We will alert you as soon as more information on this topic is available.”

We should also note that LG is not the only mobile phone maker who hasn't yet decided whether to provide an upgrade to Android 2.3 for its devices or not. Samsung also stated that it was still reviewing the possibility, without offering a final answer on this.

For the time being, we can only hope that LG would conclude that the OS upgrade should arrive on its Optimus devices. Keep an eye on this space for more on the matter.

Update: LG announced officially that an update to the Gingerbread OS will be delivered to all of its LG Optimus One devices running under Froyo: LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.
