South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is unsure on whether it would offer an Android 2.3 Gingerbread software update for its Galaxy S devices or not. According to the company, it is still weighing the pros and cons on having its Galaxy S devices brought up to Android 2.3, and would officially announce specific info on the matter as soon as it takes a decision.

A recent article on Pocket-lint brought to the web a statement from the leading handset vendor, which shows that the company is undecided on what to do next with the new mobile OS.

Here's what Samsung reportedly stated:

"In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).

Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors.

If Samsung decides to make the Update available to the users after such consideration, Samsung will use its efforts to develop such Update, which may be released to the users upon successful completion of such development."

For the time being, it does not sound like good news for Galaxy S owners out there, even if Samsung would be the first manufacturer to bring a Gingerbread-based device to the market.

Of course, the statement does not say specifically whether the software update will be released or not, but we wouldn't be surprised if it weren't, especially since it took the company more than three months to start updating Galaxy S units from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2.

However, Samsung's Galaxy S devices come with great hardware capabilities, and they would go along with Android 2.3 pretty well, should the company decide to release an OS upgrade for them.

Update: Samsung India says that Android 2.3 will certainly arrive on Galaxy S devices.
