14 DAY TRIAL // Korean giant electronics company has just launched a new line of IPS monitors with Cinema design and MHL connectivity. The new “Cinema design” is, in fact, a very thin side screen bezel that has an impressive 1.2 millimeter thickness (0.04”).
LG doesn’t say whether this is the thinnest bezel on an IPS monitor, but we can say that it’s the thinnest we’ve ever seen.
The monitor’s total thickness has been reduced to just 14.1 millimeters, which is about 0.55”.
The monitor comes with D-Sub and HDMI connectivity and some models feature USB. The HDMI connector is MHL-compliant.
MHL is a standard to connect mobile devices to high-definition televisions using modified cables that usually have a HDMI connector at one end.
Silicon Image has first demonstrated the technology in 2010 and LG, Samsung, HTC and Toshiba are strong supporters of the proposed Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) standard.
There are two monitors in LG’s press release, the IPS277L 27” display and the IPS237L 23” model.
Both feature the standard FullHD 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution, a modest 250nit brightness and 178/178 viewing angles.
The IPS technology brings an overall better image quality than classic TN LCD panels, and as LG’s new IPS7 Series feature LED backlighting, the power consumption is also considerably reduced.
There is a certain downside to IPS technology, and that is the fact that the response time is considerably higher than on TN panels.
Although the press release states a 5ms response time, we turned to LG’s own catalogue for more detailed info and there we discovered that the manufacturer acknowledges a 14ms GTG response time. We think the latter value is more likely on an IPS panel.
The contrast ratio is a high 5 million to 1, but the black values will not be as good as those on a VA panel, like we described here.
