A detailed description of professional display technologies used

Like we said, Iiyama’s ProLite XB2780HSU professional monitor boosts WLED backlighting and a VA display panel. We told you that WLED is short for White Light Emitting Diode.

Make sure you read the first and second parts of our professional display technologies presentation for more technical info.

We also said that WLED technology places a blue light-emitting diode, with yellow phosphorus producing white light, behind the display crystal and as the crystal shifts its position, it allows some of the light emitted by the white diode to pass through and form a pixel.

The shifting crystals in the display panel are characteristic to the VA panel definition gave by Wikipedia:

“Vertical alignment displays are a form of LCDs in which the liquid crystals naturally align vertically to the glass substrates.

When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystals remain perpendicular to the substrate creating a black display between crossed polarizers.”

This explains why the black levels are the best among TN, VA and IPS display technologies, but what Iiyama doesn’t tell us is the fact that WLED technology the more affordable implementation of LED backlighting.

There is also Bright LED backlighting, as used in some DELL notebooks, and this technology uses Red-Green-Blue LED backlighting producing a better image quality.

Therefore, the VA technology moves the crystals so that only a part of the white light spectrum from the WLED backlighting diode passes through and lights and colors the pixel, but if a Bright LED technology would have been used, an even better image would have resulted.

This does not mean in any way that Iiyama’s implementation is not capable of good color rendition.

On the contrary, Iiyama’s ProLite XB2780HSU professional monitor boosts a 24-bit color reproduction, and this is absolutely superior to most 8-bit IPS/VA-based panels and superior to 6-bit TN LCD monitors.

Now that we described the most important aspects of the display technologies used by Iiyama’s new professional monitor, read on our fourth article for the product presentation.
