14 DAY TRIAL // South-Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics announced recently that its 3D S-Class User Interface, which could be seen in its LG ARENA (LG-KM900) handset, had won the iF Communication Design Award 2009. According to the company, LG ARENA received the Gold award in the Product Interfaces category, in which all graphic user interfaces were included.
The iF Design Communication Award is received by innovative products that are capable of combining functionality with convenience and aesthetics. The iF Gold Award is given to the best product in each of the categories that already received an iF Design Award. There were a total of 1,368 entries this year, from which a number of thirty iF Gold Award winners emerged. The LG ARENA is the first product that received the Gold in the Product Interfaces category, which shows that the S-Class UI is superior in design.
“Through recognition from this prestigious organization, LG has once again proven its design expertise and innovation not only in physical appearance but also in user interface,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG will continue to lead with products that enhance the user experience.”
According to the mobile phone maker, its flagship handset, ARENA, was sold in Europe in more than 500,000 million units in the three months following its launch. The new 3D S-Class User Interface has been a selling point for the handset, due to the fact that it comes with easy navigation capabilities and simple multimedia features.
At the same time, the company says, the new UI has been introduced to more devices, including the Viewty Smart (LG-GC900), LG-GM730 and LG-GD900 Crystal. Given the fact that every handset is meant to fulfill certain needs, the UI has been modified to fit each device perfectly. In order to offer users the possibility to learn more about the S-Class UI, the manufacturer comes with a promotional campaign that offers them the possibility to try it on their PCs.
