Shades of gray

Killzone 3 has been confirmed as coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3 from Sony during next February and the publisher and developer have talked a lot about how the game will be the first hardcore shooter that will feature complete support for three dimensional gaming on the console. But it seems that the creators at Guerrilla Games are also interested in making an impact through the narrative they are trying to tell, in addition to pushing the limits of the PS3 as a gaming platform.

Herman Hulst, who is the leader of developer Guerrilla Games, has told GamePro, “In Killzone 3, we show that even the Helghast have some humanity left in them”, adding that, “We’re weaving a story that has more shades of gray than the trite representation of ‘good vs. evil.” Both previous Killzone titles focused on offering complex gun battles and exhilarating moments without actually playing up the emotional impact of the conflict that involves humanity and the Helghast.

Hulst added that the physical evolution of the race was linked, in their mind, to evolving society and culture. It seems that “They possess a mentality that’s similar to how the Nazis viewed those not part of the Aryan bloodline. Helghast look down on humans as weak, lying, and spineless.” The events of the Killzone series will make them question their superiority as humanity invades the home world of the Helghast.

Killzone 3 is set immediately after the events of the second game in the series. Sev and Rico are again the main characters and they find themselves trapped on the unforgiving surface of Helghan, without support and without any way out. Worse, there are factions of the Helghan Empire that hunt both humans and each other. The game will be introducing jet packs to the series and will take the player arctic, jungle and wasteland areas.
