Guerrilla Games, as the developer, and Sony, as the publisher, have announced that the open multiplayer beta phase for their upcoming first-person shooter Killzone 3 will be launched on February 2 for North American gamers and one day later in Europe, with players able to enjoy the experience until February 14 and 15.

Gamers who are interested need to get the beta client from the PlayStation Store and will be able to enjoy the Frozen Dam map, which, as the title suggests, is a wide open space centered on a dam, with the entire area covered in snow and ice.

There will be four modes that beta players will be able to experience and comment upon in the open Killzone 3 multiplayer beta.

Guerrilla Warfare is open to up to 16 players and is close to a classical team deathmatch while Warzone supports up to 24 players and will run players through five mini missions created randomly.

Operation is designed for 16 players and is also linked to mini missions, with them delivered in linear manner, while Botzone, as the names suggests, pits the gamer against as many as 15 bots allowing him to get to know the level, the weapons and the tactics that he can use on the map.

Killzone 3 is one of the biggest early year launches that are exclusive to the PlayStation 3 home console, with Sony hoping that it will prove that its platform is well suited to first-person shooters.

The game will take players back to the homeworld of the Helghast, where they need to fight their way through tougher than ever opposition while searching for a way to get off the planet and rejoin the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance.

Killzone 3 offers support for both 3D powered gaming and for the PlayStation Move motion tracking peripheral and the publisher offers a special edition which comes with a replica Helghast helmet.
