The Nintendo 3DS handheld has posted another solid week in Japan for the period that ended on May 13, although overall sales were down when compared to those seen during the so-called Golden Week, while the new PlayStation Vita is continuing to disappoint.

The 3DS has managed to sell 46,425 devices to gamers in seven days, which is down from 91,686 and suggests that the platform is still popular as a gift.

Second place in the hardware chart was picked up by the PlayStation 3 home console, which has sold 12,996 unit during the week, seeing a decline of almost 50 percent, while the old PlayStation Portable has sold 12,247, a decline from 20,033.

The PlayStation Vita handheld, launched in Japan in late December 2011, has reached a new low point and has only delivered 6,340 units to interested customers, suggesting that Sony needs to move fast in order to boost sales in the coming months.

The Nintendo Wii has also seen its overall sales more than halved and is occupying fifth position in the Japan hardware chart, ahead of the PlayStation 2, the Xbox 360 and the older DSi versions.

When it comes to video games, the bestselling title for the week was Mario Party 9, the Nintendo made game for the Wii that managed to deliver another 37,353 copies to gamers in order to reach a lifetime total of 334,821.

Second place was occupied by Fire Emblem Awakening, a Nintendo 3DS title that posted sales of 16,530 while the last place on the podium belonged to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, with seven-day sales of 14,553.

The rest of the top ten includes: Starhawk, Super Mario 3D Land, Monster Hunter 3G, Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario & Sonic at London Olympics and Conception Please Give Birth to My Children.
