The PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony is close to going under the 10,000 units sold mark on the Japanese home market less than three full months after it was released while the overall make-up of the chart remains pretty much unchanged.

According to the sales data offered by Media Create for the week that ended on March 4 the Nintendo 3DS handheld has managed to post sales of 70,744 units, which is a decline when compared to the 76,322 it has managed during the previous week, in order to keep its number one position in the hardware chart.

Second place was again captured by the PlayStation 3 home gaming console from Sony, which has managed to more than double its sales, moving 65,116 units to gamers, coming from 27,111.

The older PlayStation Portable has posted sales of 15,715, essentially flat when compared to the previous seven-day period.

The Vita, meanwhile, is going from bad to worse and has posted sales of just 10,023 handhelds for the week, coming down from 11,186.

The Nintendo Wii is selling under 10,000 consoles during the week while the PlayStation 2 has managed to move more devices than the Xbox 360, the DSi LL and the older model of the handheld.

When it comes to video game sales, the chart topper of the week that ended on March 4 was One Piece: Kaizoku Musou from Namco Bandai, which was launched on the PlayStation 3 and drove up hardware sales, with 655,774 copies sold during its debut week.

Second place was taken over by Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which arrived on the Nintendo 3DS and sold 43,155 units during the first week on sale, while the last place on the podium was taken over by harvest Moon: the Land’s Origin, with 27,378 units sold.

The rest of the top ten is made up of: Theatrythm: Final Fantasy, Mario Kart 7, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations, Super Mario 3D Land, Monster Hunter Tri G, Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave and Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles — Animal Adventure.
