Onions make for a rare treat aboard the ISS where food usually comes in a bag

Living in space is great for so many reasons; you get to see Earth from above, you see several spectacular sunrises and sunsets each day, you float around, and so on

There are a few downsides though. The food out there, no matter what Chris Hadfield would have you believe, isn't great.

Because it's expensive to carry and because astronauts can't exactly cook in space, most food is dry and prepackaged.

Once in a while though, astronauts aboard the ISS get a few special treats. A couple of months back they got ice cream. With the latest resupply mission, they got onions.

You might not think of onions as something you'd miss in space, but after five months eating food from a bag, it's a rare treat. They also make for great photos, it's not every day you see an onion floating in pseudo zero gravity.

"Space Onion – came up on the Progress resupply spaceship. We sliced it up and had it with everything – nice flavor!," Hadfield described the experience.
