Intel has announced its plans of building a news wafer fabrication facility in Israel, at its Kiryat Gat site. The new factory will be designated as Fab 28 and is set to extend Intel's manufacturing abilities by producing processors using the new 45 nm (nanometer) technology. This will happen in the second half of 2008, and the construction will begin immediately, as Intel claims. The construction project is estimated at 3.5 billion USD.

After it will be completed, Fab 28 will be Intel's number 7 300 mm wafer facility. The structure is set to have more than 200 000 square feet room space. This is a big opportunity for Israel, because the new facility will create more than 2000 jobs, and that's why the Israeli government will provide financial support.

Now Intel operates five 300 mm fabs that are to be found in Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico and in Ireland, where operations are set to begin in the first quarter of 2006.

"Our manufacturing network is a strategic asset of unmatched scope and scale that gives Intel the ability to provide customers with leading-edge products in high volume. Today's announcement of a second 45nm high volume factory reaffirms that Intel platforms will contain the most advanced and innovative technology in the world for years to come," claims Paul Otellini, Intel President and Chief Executive.
